Operators Announce September 2009 Subscriber Totals

China's three main telecom operators have announced their subscriber totals for September 2009.
September saw the net addition of approximately 9.3 mln new mobile subscribers, of which subscribers to China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) comprised more than 5.4 mln, pushing the operator's total GSM user base to 508.4 mln. In September, a total of nearly 1.66 mln subscribers used China Mobile's TD-SCDMA network services. China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) added 935,000 new GSM subs, bringing its total to nearly 142.8 mln, and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) added almost 3.0 mln CDMA subs, taking its total to nearly 46.8 mln. Of total new subs added in September, China Mobile took 58% dropping its share of China's total mobile user base from 73.04% at the end of August to 72.84% at the end of September.
China Telecom lost almost 1.8 mln fixed-line subs, reducing its total to approximately 194.4 mln, while China Unicom lost 508,000 fixed-line subs for a total of 107.1 mln.
China Telecom and Unicom enjoyed positive growth in broadband, with China Telecom adding 890,000 new users to reach under 51.5 mln, and China Unicom adding 869,000 to reach nearly 37.5 mln.
