China Telecom to Triple 3G Network Speeds

Communication Information News, 10/16/09

According to an industry source, China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) recently began initial testing of new CMDA2000 EV-DO Rev.B technology for its 3G network, which will allow the carrier to offer maximum downstream speeds of up to 9.3 Mbps - three times the speed its 3G network currently offers.

Testing is being conducted by Shanghai Telecom and Alcatel-Lucent. The upgraded network environment greatly enhances user experience for applications including VoIP, video calling, multimedia, and other high-bandwidth mobile services.

Although there has been no decision yet as to whether or not China Telecom will immediately adopt EV-DO Rev.B, the testing indicates that the operator plans to surpass China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) WCDMA offering in 3G network speed.
