MediaTek Clarifies App Store Plans
21st Century Business Herald, 9/16/09
A spokesperson for Taiwanese wireless semiconductor manufacturer MediaTek said on September 15 that the company has not launched an app store project and will continue to focus on the chipset business. However, MediaTek quietly began installing the virtual runtime environment (VRE) middleware solution necessary for the Vogins App Store on chipsets that hit the market in August.
Industry insiders claim the VRE middleware platform will allow higher-end MediaTek handsets to download and customize software like a smartphone.
A MediaTek representative said the VRE platform is one application in the MTK mobile OS but is not a mandatory component in bundled sales. Yu Mingduo, CFO and press spokesman, previously said that once released, the VRE platform would create a bridge between application developers and handset manufacturers. Yu explained the platform would allow handset makers to provide a variety of localized software to create distinct handset products, while allowing app developers to create gaming, music, and other kinds of mobile Internet applications. An API interface is also being planned, which will allow even more possible applications and attract more development partners.
