China Unicom Targets 8Mbps Broadband by 2011

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has unveiled its broadband bandwidth targets for the next two years. The operator aims to double bandwidth each year, providing 80% of subscribers with 2Mbps speeds in 2009, 4Mbps access in 2010 and 8Mbps bandwidth by 2011. Tang Xiongyan, deputy director of China Unicom's national broadband applications laboratory, said this is China Unicom's first comprehensive large-scale FTTx expansion. Ultimately Unicom hopes to provide speeds up to 20-30Mbps and even 50-100Mbps in China's northeast.
