Chengdu CMMB Users Reach 1,800 in First Month
DVBCN, 9/11/09
Since Chengdu initiated encrypted CMMB broadcasting on August 18 through September 9, the city's CMMB users have exceeded 1,800. Over 1,100 subscribers use large SD card solutions, 400 use SMD cards, and 80-90 use small SD card solutions. Since official operation began on August 28th, China Broadcasting Corporation's (CBC) service hall has, on average, opened accounts for over 60 new customers per day.
According to Sichuan CBC marketing manager Chen Yangbo, the company has partnered with 4 authorized sales agencies in Sichuan, with over 30 authorized service locations in Chengdu. Chen said that the company expects it will have to add an additional 100-200 service halls this year in order to meet customer demand.
Sichuan currently broadcasts CMMB signal in 9 prefecture-level cities, but only Chengdu has begun paid service. The other 8 cities are expected to begin charging for service in late September or early October.
Editor's Note: China Satellite Mobile Broadcasting Corporation (CSMBC), China's sole CMMB operator, officially announced on August 26 that it would change its name to China Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). The company also officially announced that it will be promoting CMMB under the brand name "Jingcai," (homonymous with the Chinese word for "wonderful") much as China's telecom operators have each branded their 3G networks under flashier names.
