China Telecom Releases First 3G Handset Under RMB 2,000

According to Chinese handset manufacturer Yulong, the first 50,000 Yulong Coolpad D280 handsets, based on the CDMA2000 EV-DO standard, have been released at a retail price of RMB 1,680. The phones will be distributed nationwide via Beijing-based distributor China Postel, and will be sold throughout common retail locations as well as China Telecom's (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) service halls.
Coolpad brand marketing general supervisor Gu Yong said that another 3 models of 3G phones priced in the RMB 1,000-2,000 range will hit the market in September and October.
According to a source from another manufacturer that also won a bid for China Telecom's current round of 3G handsets, September will prove to be a peak month for release of 3G handsets in the RMB 1,000-2,000 range, with Samsung and ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) 3G handsets also launching this month, and hundreds of additional EV-DO models expected to hit stores.
