Rumor: Unicom iPhone May Have Wi-Fi/WAPI

21st Century Business Herald, 9/03/09

A source close to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has revealed that while the Ministry had considered banning Wi-Fi enabled iPhones from entering China, China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has finally convinced MIIT to permit the phones, by promising that future iPhones will support upgrades to WAPI, China's homegrown wireless broadband standard. "Judging from current preparations, it seems likely that Unicom will first release a batch of iPhones with no Wi-Fi functionality, to be followed later by Wi-Fi-enabled models," said the source. Unicom has yet to confirm the rumor.

Editor's Note: An earlier rumor said Foxconn (2038.HK; 2354.TW) was developing a WCDMA iPhone with both Wi-Fi and WAPI capability. For more information, please see "Rumor: China Unicom to Introduce Wi-Fi/WAPI iPhone by Year End," MD, 8/21/09 issue.
