China Cracks Down on 45 Foreign Games

China Press and Publishing Journal, 8/31/09

At an information session on cleaning up online gaming on August 27, a spokesperson for China's General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) announced the results of an investigation under which it ordered the closure and cessation of operations of 45 unauthorized foreign games, 26 of which were found to contain vulgar content. 27 online gaming companies, including 51wan, were served with notices of infraction and given a limited amount of time to bring operations into compliance with the law; executives at 10 companies were ordered to come in for questioning. Over the past two months, GAPP has organized a dedicated team to review more than 200 games, including browser games, already in operation and investigate any games and enterprises found to be in violation of regulations.
