China Mobile Targets 3 Mln TD-SCDMA Subscribers in 2009

At China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK)'s mid-year results announcement on August 20, CEO Wang Jianzhou said he was confident that the operator would have 3 mln TD-SCDMA 3G subscribers by the end of the year. China Mobile has set forth three possible development targets for 2011, with 30 mln subscribers at the lowest, 50 mln as a mid-range goal, and 85 mln subscribers as the highest target, depending mainly on changing market demands and related mobile handset development. Xue Taohai, financial director and deputy GM of the company, said that in H1 2009 China Mobile paid out approximately RMB 5.16 bln in handset subsidies, with a total outlay of approximately RMB 12 bln planned for this year - up 50% from the RMB 8 bln it paid in handset subsidies in previous years, and targeted primarily at subsidies for its TD-SCDMA services.
According to China Securities News, China Mobile executive board chairman and Vice President Li Yue said the operator currently has 46,000 base stations set up for its 3G services in 38 cities, with plans to grow to 85,000 base stations in 238 cities by the end of the year.
