SARFT Outlines Terrestrial Digital TV Plan

China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) has revealed plans for urban deployment of terrestrial DTV. Before the end of this year, self-governed municipalities as well as a handful of other cities will launch two terrestrial HDTV channels, while each prefecture-level city will launch one.

Xie Jinhui, vice president of SARFT's Academy of Broadcasting Planning, said that terrestrial DTV will be provided free of charge and unencrypted as a public service. SARFT projects that by the end of 2009 over 100 cities will provide terrestrial DTV, and the entire nation will have launched terrestrial DTV at the city level or higher in the first half of 2010.
