Alibaba Moves Koubei from China Yahoo to Taobao

Alibaba Group has announced local search engine Koubei will be spun off from China Yahoo and integrated with Taobao, while China Yahoo will continue to provide email, data and search services.

Alibaba merged Koubei with China Yahoo to create Yahoo Koubei in July 2008, a localized lifestyle services platform.

Editor's Note: Wang Tong, head of PR and customer relations at China Yahoo, said the company feels confident about China Yahoo's renewed focus on data services, and the Koubei team will be fully integrated with the Taobao staff following the split. An industry insider said the move is probably due to difficulties between Alibaba Group and U.S. partner Yahoo. Wang denied the suggestion, but declined to elaborate.
