Taobao H1 2009 Transactions Reach RMB 80.9 Bln

Chinese B2C and C2C e-commerce site Taobao has released a performance report for the first half of 2009 ending June 30, recording RMB 80.9 bln in transaction value, compared to RMB 99.96 bln for the entirety of 2008. Transactions on Taobao accounted for 1.4% of total national consumer goods sales in H1 2009 as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics (RMB 5.871 trln), up 0.4 percentage points from the end of last year.

Taobao recorded 145 mln registered users in H1 2009, equivalent to 43% of all Chinese Internet users. During the period, the number of e-commerce users grew at a rate of 101%, threefold the growth rate of the number of Chinese Internet users.
