China Unicom Launches Mobile Directory Services

116114, China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) mobile directory service, launched in 31 provinces around the country on August 18. The service integrates Unicom's national number database, and extends the original voice-based 116114 directory service directly onto handsets. The only costs for the service are bandwidth charges; no information service fees are charged. In just one week of testing, visits to 116114's WAP portal totaled over 200,000, and the client application for the service was downloaded more than 10,000 times.

In terms of functionality, the mobile 116114 service offers a variety advantages over basic voice directory services. For example, users can not only look up local phone numbers, but can also look up numbers in other cities. The service also allows users knowing only a phone number to look up the company associated with the number. Users can either directly dial the numbers they have looked up, or can bookmark the number or send the number to a friend via SMS.
