Mecoxlane Sues Baidu, Vancl

China Computer World, 8/10/09

Chinese B2C mail-order e-commerce site operator Mecoxlane has confirmed that it brought a suit against search engine Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) and online B2C clothing retailer Vancl. The case has been accepted by the Shanghai Pudong District People's Court.

Mecoxlane alleges that searches on Baidu for 'Mecoxlane' and the company's URL 'm18.com,' as well as other company-specific keywords, returned query results listing rival company Vancl in first place, along with a note that Vancl was a "Sponsored Link."

Mecoxlane is demanding that Baidu and Vancl agree to immediately cease use of its trademarks, pay RMB 500,000 in damages, and issue a public apology.

Baidu and Vancl both said they were 'gathering more information' about the case, and declined to comment.
