MIIT Reveals 3G Deployment Statistics

As of the end of June, China's three major telecom operators had invested RMB 80 bln in 3G deployment, according to Zhu Hongren, head of the Department of Operations Monitoring and Coordination at China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). In remarks at an MIIT press conference on economic development, Zhu said China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) had set up 44,000 3G base stations, had begun rolling out phase-three of TD-SCDMA construction, and will provide TD-SCDMA coverage to 238 cities by year's end. China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) and China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) combined have deployed 146,000 3G base stations and have begun offering 3G network services in 342 and 100 cities respectively.
