Rumor: Tianyi to Be Merged into China Telecom Division
Sohu IT, 7/21/09
Representatives of Tianyi Telecom Terminal Co and parent company China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) have both denied rumors that Tianyi's nationwide network of city level branches and offices will be shut down and merged into China Telecom's individual customer department.
Reliable sources told the National Business Daily that as of the end of June Tianyi Telecom Terminal's nationwide branches were shut down for not meeting performance requirements, and would cease to exist as a separate company, instead being merged with China Telecom's individual customer department. The National Business Daily further reported that China Telecom is clearly indicating that Tianyi Telecom Terminal will play a diminished role in its non-operator terminal distribution strategy.
An insider at Tianyi Telecom Terminal said the company's 3G business not only includes individual users but enterprise clients, and that the merger would confuse otherwise clear-cut roles played by the two China Telecom divisions. A Beijing Telecom source, meanwhile, said they had never received notification regarding the shutdown and merger of the Tianyi Telecom Terminal Beijing branch.
