Alipay Responds to Charges of Aiding Pornographers
Sina Tech, 7/14/09
Responding to media reports that it had provided payment processing services for pornographic pay sites, third-party payment processor Alipay said today that it had always had a strict policy of banning customers engaged in illegal transactions, adding that it has a dedicated team devoted to investigating customers. At present, Alipay says it has not found any evidence of pornographic site activity among its existing user base, but that it will immediately halt service for any users found to be engaging in illegal businesses, and will cooperate with police in investigating evidence and prosecuting.
Editor's Note: On July 14, the Beijing Times quoted the Public Security Bureau as saying that the majority of overseas pornographic sites accepted membership fees through Alipay or other domestic third-party payment processors including NPS, 99Pay, CNCard.com, Paypal, and Yeepay, making these payment processors a major channel for illegal profit. Reportedly, some payment processors are fully aware of the pornographic content of these sites, yet continue to provide services, receiving a 15% to 25% commission on subscription fees.
