Guangdong Unicom to Accelerate 3G Trials
South Daily, 7/08/09
Guangdong Unicom will begin 3G commercial trials on July 19 in fifteen cities, including Qingyuan, Shantou, Jiangmen, Huizhou and Zhaoqing. The trials come two months ahead of a previously scheduled commercial trial for the entire province on September 1. Unicom plans to have 80 brand stores, retail outlets and sales counters open for business by the start date. Guangdong Unicom is also providing various 3G services including a national-level 3G portal, mobile phone TV, mobile music, and mobile newspapers, as well as local services such as a Guangdong 3G portal, mobile magazines, mobile office, video IVR (interactive voice response) and 3G push-to-talk.
Guangdong Unicom launched WCDMA commercial trials on May 17 in six cities: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Foshan, Zhongshan and Zhuhai. Part of the original plan was to distribute 36,000 3G mobile numbers before September 1, which was completed at the end of last month ahead of schedule. A Guangdong Unicom employee divulged that the company currently ranks first among all provincial branches of China Unicom in the number of WCDMA subscribers, accounting for a quarter of all users nationwide. Guangdong Unicom aims to have nearly 1 mln units in sales volume for 3G netbooks, handsets, and data cards by the end of the year.
