Guangdong Internet Access Disrupted for 2 Hours
Southern Metropolis Daily, 6/26/09
Guangdong's telecommunications networks appeared to suffer major technical failure on June 25, beginning at 5:50 PM, with broadband connections cut off, leaving users unable to surf the Web in areas throughout the province. After news of the outage broke, many Internet users around the country reported similar disruptions in Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi, Hainan and Shanghai. The outage lasted until approximately 8:20 PM, two and a half hours later.
Guangdong Telecom said the problem seemed to lie in a router outside the province that led to significant traffic congestion, preventing some users from going online, but access within the provincial network was unaffected. The incident is currently under investigation.
A representative for Guangdong Telecom also said that the Public Security Bureau is conducting a full investigation into the breakdown. The representative did not discount the possibility that the operator's servers were attacked, saying that even if every users was online simultaneously it would not account for the disruption, and that the breakdown was definitely caused by "an external force."
