Shanghai Unicom Expands 3G Number Sales
Oriental Morning Post, 6/25/09
Shanghai Unicom has announced that its directly operated service centers have begun issuing 3G (186-prefix) numbers on a large scale. Parent company China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) had previously said, on May 17, that it would begin commercial trials of 3G services with small groups of "friendly users," but would not issue numbers to the public at large.
A spokesperson for Shanghai Unicom said the company had begun issuing 3G numbers on a larger scale because, although the operator is still optimizing its 3G networks, the network is already developed enough that Shanghai users will be able to enjoy good quality 3G service throughout the majority of the city.
Editor's Note: In a telephone discussion with Marbridge, a Shanghai Unicom service representative confirmed that all interested individuals can now purchase a 3G number and subscribe for 3G handset services at Shanghai Unicom outlet stores.
