MIIT Announces May 2009 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its May 2009 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom operating revenues were RMB 71.5 bln (USD 10.5 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 345.0 bln (USD 50.6 bln), up 2.1% over the same 5-month period of 2008. Capital expenditure for the month came to RMB 22.9 bln (USD 3.4 bln), bringing the year-to-date total to RMB 87.7 bln (USD 12.9 bln), a 16.9% year-on-year increase.
Mobile subscribers grew by over 8.1 mln in May to over 686.9 mln. A total of nearly 319.5 bln SMS messages were sent during the first five months of 2009, an 11.2% increase YoY.
Fixed-line (including PHS) growth was negative for the twenty-second consecutive month, with total subscribers dropping by 1.7 mln to 331.5 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed line and PHS, the PHS subscriber base declined for the twenty-fourth straight month, with a net loss of 1.7 mln subs, dropping the total to 60.9 mln. Traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers increased by 29,000 to 270.6 mln.
Broadband added approximately 1.8 mln new registered users to reach over 91.6 mln, while dial-up Internet access lost 46,000 users, dropping the total to less than 10.4 mln.
