Operators Announce May 2009 Subscriber Totals

China's three main telecom operators have announced their subscriber totals for May 2009.
May saw the net addition of over 8.0 mln new mobile subscribers, of which subscribers to China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) comprised over 5.1 mln, pushing the operator's total GSM user base to approximately 488.1 mln. In May, a total of 746,000 subscribers used China Mobile's TD-SCDMA network services. China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) added less than 0.7 mln new GSM subs, bringing its total to over 139.5 mln, and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) added roughly 2.2 mln CDMA subs, bringing its total to over 36.9 mln. Of total new subs added in May, China Mobile took 64%, slightly reducing its share of China's total mobile user base to 73.5%.
China Telecom lost 1.4 mln fixed-line subs, reducing its total to less than 200.8 mln, while China Unicom lost 289,000 fixed-line subs for a total of 108.7 mln.
In broadband, China Telecom added 750,000 new users to reach over 48.2 mln, and China Unicom added 779,000 subs, bringing its total to over 33.9 mln.
