LG's First Ophone to Debut in November

CCW, 6/16/09

South Korean handset manufacturer LG is set to release its first CMMB-enabled TD-SCDMA handset using China Mobile's Android-based 'Open Mobile System' OMS operating system in November, 2009. LG plans to launch at least two more products based on OMS in 2010.

LG successfully developed an EDGE prototype based on the OMS platform in the first half of 2009. The company estimates it will capture one-third of the bids for China Mobile's RMB 47 mln "flagship broadband internet handset" procurement, in part due to its OMS research and development.

Editor's Note: In May, China Mobile announced that it would provide RMB 600 mln in TD-SCDMA-development subsidies to nine handset manufacturers and three chipset manufacturers.
