SARFT Drafting New Rules on TV Shopping, Advertising

Xinhua.net, 6/11/09

China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) is currently drafting a proposal for new regulations on television shopping, according to a senior official speaking at the 15th Annual Shanghai Television Festival. Ren Qian, deputy director of SARFT's Department of Media Organization and Online Programming Supervision, said the agency will begin classifying and regulating television shopping programs, and will prohibit false or misleading television advertising. Media outlets that violate broadcasting or advertising regulations may face a trading freeze on any listed shares or broadcast suspension. The most serious violators may have their operating licenses revoked.
