China Unicom Aims for 20-30 Mln 3G Subs

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) vice-president Zhang Jun'an, while attending the June 3 Cross-Strait Communication Industry Cooperation and Exchange Conference, predicted the company will have between 20 to 30 mln commercial 3G subscribers within one year after commercial launch of WCDMA services, and plans to order a volume of 3G handsets that would more than cover that many subscribers.
Zhang also remarked that China Unicom is in talks to reduce roaming fees with four Taiwanese telecom operators that use the same WCDMA standard, namely Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, Far EasTone Telecommunications and 3G operator Vibo Telecom.
