MIIT Announces April 2009 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its April 2009 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom revenues were RMB 71.1 bln (USD 10.4 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 273.5 bln (USD 40.0 bln), up 2.0% over the same 4-month period of 2008. Capital expenditure for the month came to RMB 19.9 bln (USD 2.9 bln), bringing the year-to-date total to RMB 64.8 bln (USD 9.5 bln), a 16.8% year-on-year increase.
Mobile subscribers grew by 8.5 mln in April to over 678.8 mln. A total of nearly 255 bln SMS messages were sent during the first four months of 2009, an 11.4% increase YoY.
Fixed-line (including PHS) growth was negative for the twenty-first consecutive month, with total subscribers dropping by 2.1 mln to 333.2 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed line and PHS, the PHS subscriber base declined for the twenty-third straight month, with a net loss of over 2.1 mln subs, dropping the total to 62.6 mln. Traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers increased by 26,000 to nearly 270.6 mln.
Broadband added approximately 1.7 mln new registered users to reach over 89.8 mln, while dial-up Internet access lost 333,000 users, dropping the total to 10.4 mln.
