Operators Announce April 2009 Subscriber Totals

China's three main telecom operators have announced their subscriber totals for April 2009.
April saw the net addition of over 8.8 mln new mobile subscribers, of which subscribers to China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) comprised over 5.8 mln, pushing the operator's total GSM user base to approximately 483.0 mln. In April, a total of 514,000 subscribers used China Mobile's TD-SCDMA network services. China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) added over 1.1 mln new GSM subs, bringing its total to over 138.8 mln, and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) added roughly 1.9 mln CDMA subs, bringing its total to over 34.7 mln. Of total new subs added in April, China Mobile took 66%, bringing its share of China's total mobile user base to 73.6%.
China Telecom lost 1.9 mln fixed-line subs, reducing its total to 202.1 mln, while China Unicom lost 171,000 fixed-line subs for a total of 109.0 mln.
China Telecom enjoyed strong growth in broadband, adding 720,000 new users to reach approximately 47.5 mln. China Unicom added 540,000 broadband subs, bringing its total to approximately 33.2 mln.
