Guangzhou to Subsidize E-commerce Services for SMEs

Guangzhou province has commenced a program designed to promote the use of e-commerce by small and medium enterprises (SMEs), with Guangzhou deputy mayor Xu Zhibiao presenting four companies, including Alibaba Guangzhou, with municipal SME e-commerce service provider certification.
Guangzhou plans to invest RMB 10 mln to purchase services from companies including Alibaba to subsidize e-commerce development costs for 11,000 SMEs. The Guangzhou Municipal Information Industry Office has revealed that according to a survey of 1,190 key SMEs across the city, in 2008 the scale of e-commerce reached RMB 300 bln, with total transaction value from 6 backbone enterprises exceeding RMB 10 bln each. Among Guangzhou SMEs making use of e-commerce services, 61.2% saw increased sales revenue, while 53.6% recorded reduced purchasing costs, and 27% experienced increased customer volume.
