China Unicom, Willcom Partner on Next-Gen PHS

According to foreign media reports, China Unicom (NYSE: CHU, 0762.HK) will soon begin 2-year next-generation PHS network upgrade tests in cooperation with Japanese mobile operator Willcom. China Unicom is expected to provide access to infrastructure, with software and online solutions to be provided by Willcom, and testing equipment to be supplied by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The cooperation is primarily directed at public medical and educational institution data transfer services, with a focus on the use of wireless video cameras and sensors. Next-generation PHS technology is expected to be ready for commercial use by 2011.
