MIIT Announces March 2009 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its March 2009 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom revenues were RMB 73.6 bln (USD 10.8 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 202.4 bln (USD 29.6 bln), up 1.9% over the same 3-month period of 2008. The cumulative year-to-date capital expenditure reached RMB 44.9 bln (USD 6.6 bln), a 7.8% year-on-year increase.
Mobile subscribers grew by 10.6 mln in March to over 670.3 mln. A total of nearly 195 bln SMS messages were sent during the first three months of 2009, an 11.5% increase YoY.
Fixed-line (including PHS) growth was negative for the twentieth consecutive month, with total subscribers dropping by nearly 2.4 mln to 335.3 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed line and PHS, the PHS subscriber base declined for the twenty-second straight month, with a net loss of over 1.7 mln subs, dropping the total to less than 64.8 mln. Traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers decreased by over 644,000 to under 270.6 mln.
Broadband added approximately 1.7 mln new registered users to reach over 88.1 mln, while dial-up Internet access lost 764,000 users, dropping the total to less than 10.8 mln.
