Rumor: China Unicom to Recruit 500K "Friendly Users"

An industry source has revealed that China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) will begin WCDMA commercial trials on May 17, with 250,000 "friendly" mobile phone users nationwide (excluding company staff), and another 250,000 "friendly" data card users. An industry insider stated that China Unicom hopes to optimize WCDMA network services through the trials in preparation for full commercial use.

Editor's Note: Although it has not yet been specified what benefits would be given to China Unicom's friendly users, when China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) conducted TD-SCDMA commercial trials it gave "friendly users" a free handset and a fixed amount of free phone credit each month.
