Operators Announce March 2009 Subscriber Totals

China's three main telecom operators have announced their subscriber totals for March 2009.
Mobile subscriber uptake was nearly 10.6 mln in March. Of this total, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) added approximately 6.5 mln new mobile subscribers to reach 477.2 mln. In March, a total of 366,000 subscribers used China Mobile's TD-SCDMA network services. China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) added over 1.8 mln new GSM subs, bringing its total to 137.7 mln, and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) added 2.2 mln CDMA subs, bringing its total to over 32.8 mln. Of total new subs added in March, China Mobile took 62%, bringing its share of China's total mobile user base to 73.7%.
China Telecom lost over 1.8 mln fixed-line subs, reducing its total to 204 mln, while China Unicom added 223,000 fixed-line subs for a total of 109.2 mln.
China Telecom enjoyed strong growth in broadband, adding 870,000 new users to reach approximately 46.8 mln. China Unicom added 927,000 broadband subs, bringing its total to 32.6 mln.
