Shanghai Bans In-vehicle Taxi Advertising

NBD, 4/17/09

The Shanghai Municipal Transport and Port Authority has released regulations forbidding the new installation of video advertising displays inside Shanghai taxis. According to the regulations, once current advertising contracts come to term, existing video displays must also be removed. The move comes after the authority received a large number of complaints from passengers stating that the displays were annoying and intrusive. Yang Changhai, deputy chief economist at the Shanghai Municipal Transport and Port Authority, stated that a total of 4,000 taxis currently have video advertising systems installed.

Du Geli, general manager of in-vehicle digital media firm Touchmedia, stated that the new regulations would not affect Touchmedia's plans to go public. The company currently owns nearly 20,000 interactive screens across China.
