Microsoft China, Small Laptop OEMs to Cooperate
National Business Daily, 3/26/09
Microsoft China has announced the establishment of a Windows 7 hardware evaluation center in Beijing. An employee at Microsoft China's Hardware Innovation Center stated that senior management at the company recently completed negotiations with a number of Shenzhen-based small, non-branded notebook computer manufacturers, and has reached preliminary cooperation understandings with several companies. An informed source revealed that Microsoft's Windows XP operating system would be made available to the manufacturers for USD 19 per copy.
Microsoft China plans to launch a Windows 7 logo certification plan that will allow consumers to easily identify reliable products compatible with Windows. According to sources, it will cost USD 200 for each computer model that receives Windows certification. After obtaining certification, notebook computers from the smaller companies will have the same certification as larger computer manufacturers such as Lenovo (0992.HK) and HP. A notebook computer manufacturer in Shenzhen stated that receiving Windows logo certification would be beneficial for the export of their notebooks.
