China Mobile Fires Employees over SMS Spam Scandal
ChinaByte, 3/22/09
China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has announced the outcome of an initial internal investigation into allegations that the company's Shandong subsidiaries were sending SMS spam to users. The allegations were aired on World Consumer Rights Day by China's national broadcaster CCTV. The internal investigation confirmed that a number of China Mobile's Shandong subsidiaries had violated regulations and sent SMS spam to subscribers. As a result, it has fired four employees including the deputy general manager of its Dezhou subsidiary and the deputy manager of the corporate customer department of its Rizhao subsidiary. It has also demoted five staff from the marketing departments of its Dezhou and Rizhou subsidiaries, and has issued disciplinary warnings to the general managers of the two subsidiaries. In addition, China Mobile will provide a criticism of its Shandong subsidiary to the entire China Mobile Group.
Editor's Note: On March 15, CCTV revealed that a number of China Mobile subsidiaries in Shandong province were sending advertising SMS messages to users. The subsidiaries also allegedly sold the personal information of local and national China Mobile subscribers to third-parties.
