CNNIC: China Has 55 Mln Online Gamers

According to the ‘Report and Analysis of China's Online Game Subscribers' released today by the Chinese Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), as of the end of December 2008, China had 55.5 mln online gamers. The report defines online gamers as people who have played massively multiplayer online games (MMOG) at least once per month.
The ratio of paying subscribers continued to increase, rising to 76.5%. CNNIC defined ‘paying subscribers' as those users who engaged in official or unofficial "virtual transactions" – including in-game props, virtual currency, gold-farming or purchases of game accounts. 19.6% of all users, or 1,088 users surveyed, had purchased in-game props via unofficial channels. The size of the virtual goods market reached RMB 10-13 bln in 2008.
Users tended toward the younger, less-educated, and lower-income. 52.5% of online gamers were 22 or younger, 77.1% had less than a college-level education, 30% had no income, and the majority of users had monthly income in the range of RMB 1,001 – 2,000.
