MIIT to Increase TV Price-Cap in Rural Promotion

China Securities Journal, 3/18/09

An employee with a domestic television manufacturer has revealed that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT)';s Department of Electronics and Information has called for suggestions regarding price-caps from domestic manufacturers participating in a government-sponsored rural subsidy on consumer electronics. The department is considering raising the current RMB 2,000 price cap on color televisions, with many companies suggesting the limit be increased to RMB 3,000.

A source at the MIIT revealed that the ministry has finished soliciting suggestions, and relevant departments will soon begin considerations based on industry advice and market conditions. The source emphasized that a higher price cap does not mean a price increase, but simply an expansion of the scope of bidding and consumer choice.
