GAPP Deliberates on WoW Expansion Pack
Duowan, 3/13/09
Liu Binjie, director of the General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) and the National Copyright Association of China, said he believes that if GAPP were to approve the latest expansion pack to World of Warcraft, it would raise issues harmful to the interests of Chinese gamers and game operators.
Liu said GAPP had invited some experts to discuss the new expansion pack during its review process, but that no consensus had been achieved. The new expansion pack makes the game "more exciting" for players than the previous version had, but some of the content was found to be inconsistent with the notion of "healthy green gaming" that GAPP has been promoting. On the other hand, GAPP has the duty to protect the interests of domestic game operators - hence the conflicts that have delayed a ruling on the expansion pack.
Liu added that The9 (Nasdaq: NCTY) had approached GAPP within the previous several days claiming that if the expansion pack was not approved, the company would go out of business, having spent a large sum of money for the rights to the delayed expansion pack.
