Unicom Faces Pressure from Policy Changes

Sohu IT, 3/11/09

A source with China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has revealed that at a company meeting convened yesterday, Unicom chairman and CEO Chang Xiaobing stated that China Unicom faced pressure from a number of policy changes this year. These included new policy requirements to close down its PHS network, telecommunication tariff policies, and asymmetrical inter-network settlement charges. Chang stated the pressure would be especially strong in tariff and inter-network settlement fee policies which would almost certainly be biased towards supporting the development of TD-SCDMA. Chang also mentioned that the company faced a number of difficulties related to insufficient spectrum, large debt and low profit.
