Taobao Testing Offline Stores

Sina Tech, 2/23/09

A spokesperson for Chinese C2C and B2C e-commerce site Taobao has confirmed the company began testing offline Taobao convenience stores in 2008, giving Taobao sellers permission to use the Taobao brand name to establish brick-and-mortar stores and provide Taobao member services using a franchising model. Customers can visit the stores to select and pay for goods, and then after three days, return with their proof-of-purchase to collect their order. Taobao currently has tens of these stores across the country and is in discussion with traditional convenience stores regarding potential cooperation.
