Rumor: Google China Developing MP3 "Hum" Search

Sina Tech, 2/13/09

An industry source has revealed that Google China R&D is working on voice operated MP3 search technology that allows users to search for a song by humming the melody. The functionality is slated for release some time in 2009. However, since the technology is not yet mature, the beta product will not provide a foolproof search experience, and the user may need to adjust settings for intonation. Google will continue to refine the product after its release.

A Google China spokesperson declined comment, saying Google does not comment on rumors.

Google has been developing MP3 search services in China since last year, but has yet to launch the service globally.
