China Telecom Launches Rural Handset Promotion

China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) announced last weekend it had received approval to sell subsidized consumer electronics in rural areas throughout China's 31 mainland provinces, as part of a nationwide government program. Furthermore it has launched a CDMA handset promotional package allowing rural users to receive discounts and rebates for fixed-line, broadband and mobile phone credit, in addition to the 13% government subsidy they receive on the handset purchase price.
