China to Shut Down PHS by 2011
Sina Tech, 2/03/09
A China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) spokesperson revealed that the government agency overseeing spectrum allocation requires the 1900-1920MHz wireless frequency to be cleared before the end of 2011 to ensure it does not interfere with the TD-SCDMA system to be launched on the neighboring 1880-1900MHz frequency band.
The 1900-1920MHz band was originally allocated nationally for PHS use. According to sources from China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) and China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH), the companies have received documents from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) stating that the withdrawal of PHS should be finished before the end of 2011.
