China Unicom Finalizes WCDMA Bidding Results

According to telecom equipment vendors, yesterday China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) WCDMA bidding results for 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities were finalized. Telecom equipment manufacturer Huawei acquired a 30% share, Ericsson nearly 27%, ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) approximately 21%-22%, Nokia Siemens Networks 12% and Alcatel-Lucent 11%.

The vendors said that profits will be thin given that the cost per base station was approximately RMB 30,000 per carrier-sector.

Editor's Note: In bidding for China Unicom's WCDMA equipment contracts, Motorola submitted bids based on supplying equipment from Huawei, while New Postcom and Fiberhome Technologies submitted bids based on supplying equipment from Ericsson.
