Daqi Loses Privacy Infringement Suit

China Business News, 1/12/09

China's first court case involving cyber-violence has been partially concluded in Beijing, with online forums site Daqi.com ordered to compensate Wang Fei for damages to his reputation after the website published negative information about him online. The negative information was published following the suicide of Wang's wife in relation to an alleged affair.

According to the court's partial ruling, Daqi's parent company, Beijing Lingyun Interactive Information and Technology, must delete its special topic pages on the matter within 7 days of the court ruling, and must also publish a public apology on the website's front page for at least 10 days. The content of the apology is to be provided by the court.

Xu Juan, presiding judge for the case, stated that because Beijing Lingyun has disputed the location of the public apology, a final verdict has not yet been reached.
