Tudou, Youku Block Japanese, Korean IP Addresses

Tencent Tech, 1/05/09

Online video-sharing site Tudou has recently begun denying access to Japanese IP addresses, a move Youku took several months ago. An employee at Youku stated that blocking Japanese and Korean IP addresses was not only a strategy to lower bandwidth costs, but also to take into consideration users and copyrighted material. Tudou has not yet commented on its decision.

Previous reports suggested that the Japanese Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) and other television stations and related industries within Japan were considering intensifying measures to counter the unauthorized use of Japanese content on Chinese video-sharing sites. Illegally broadcast material includes Japanese television series and animation.
