Sohu Accuses Tencent of Copying IME

Sina Tech, 1/04/09

In a recent posting on the official blog for its Sogou Pinyin input method editor (IME), Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU) has accused Tencent's (0700.HK) QQ Pinyin IME of copying a portion of Sogou's functionality. Sogou provided numerous illustrations on the site showing how Tencent's input method copied various portions of the Sogou Pinyin IME, including Sogou's specially segmented word banks suited for different professions/users, its English IME, its skinning style as well as its smart delete feature and various other functionality for simplifying the entry of URLs, email addresses, dates and times.

Tencent has responded to the accusations by stating that it hadn't seen the post in question, but hoped that the media would refrain from reporting erroneous information.

In April 2007, Google was also accused of plagiarizing Sohu's Pinyin Input Method.
