MIIT Announces November 2008 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its November 2008 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom revenues were RMB 66.3 bln (USD 9.8 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 746.1 bln (USD 109.7 bln), up 7.6% over the same 11-month period of 2007.
Mobile subscribers grew by approximately 6.6 mln in November to over 633.8 mln. A total of approximately 57 bln SMS messages were sent during November, bringing the cumulative total for the first eleven months of the year to 638 bln, a 19.2% increase over the same 11-month period of 2007.
Fixed-line (including PHS) growth was negative for the sixteenth consecutive month, with total subscribers dropping by 3.0 mln to approximately 348.5 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed line and PHS, the PHS subscriber base declined for the eighteenth straight month, with a net loss of 1.7 mln subs, dropping the total to 72.3 mln. Traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers decreased by 1.3 mln to just under 276.2 mln.
Broadband added approximately 1.2 mln new registered users to reach 83.4 mln, while dial-up Internet access lost 199,000 users, dropping the total to 14.6 mln.
