CAVCA Wins Karaoke Copyright Lawsuit

The first batch of judgments in the China Audio-Video Copyright Association's (CAVCA) copyright infringement case against almost one hundred Beijing karaoke establishments have been released. Nine establishments, including Tong Yi Shou Ge and Zhuzhu Xian were fined between RMB 46,000 and RMB 100,000 and ordered to cease infringement. Total compensation amounts to almost RMB 1 mln.

CAVCA is suing almost 100 establishments, including Huayang Nianhua and Club 5, for unlicensed use of music videos. About 30% of these have agreed to pay licensing fees.

Of the 1,000 karaoke establishments in Beijing, 200 are paying copyright fees.
