China Mobile to Release 188-prefix Numbers and Bundled Services
Southern Metropolitan News, 12/16/08
A senior executive at Guangdong Mobile has revealed that it will begin issuing 188-prefix phone numbers, at which time Guangdong will become the first testing point for its "home services plan," which binds 188-prefix numbers with a number of 3G home services.
China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) is also preparing to use the 188-prefix for its "wireless wireline" TD-SCDMA wireless/fixed-network services, similar to PHS but supporting short-number dialing, family conference calls, and other traditional fixed-line services, albeit limited to local calling. Monthly costs will be RMB 10, with incoming calls free. The first three minutes of outgoing calls will be RMB 0.22; afterwards, RMB 0.11.
A spokesperson for China Mobile said the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) had approved the "wireless wireline" service and the operator's pricing plans. China Mobile will soon introduce the service.
